10M Dayboat

10m Super Yacht Away Boat
In response to Design Competition 2, hosted by Professional Boat Builder Magazine, Naval Architect Chris Dowie M.Eng, GMRINA, of Ace Marine Ltd. sets forth a potential solution to the challenge. Here we offer a sneak preview before the results of the competition is announced - a hybrid electric powered Super Yacht away boat.

The design inspiration for this tender stems from the realisation that super yachts are getting progressively larger, and as a consequence, can offer their clients a diverse range of activities, from water toys such as jet skis and powerboats, to miniature submersibles and day sailor yachts. The down side to this is that the larger a yacht gets, it is potentially more restricted in what anchorages and bays it can explore, perhaps tending to moor in deeper water or in less desirable harbour locations. The idea of this design would be to allow a small party of guests, perhaps with little boating experience, to take a beautiful, easy to handle and eco friendly vessel for 2 days independence from the mother ship. They would then have the ideal platform to explore local archipelagos, spend hours in secluded shallow bays snorkelling and swimming, and stay on board for the evening enjoying the local settings that perhaps the large yacht might not be able to. As this vessel has been kept remarkably simple in operation, the client, who may not be particularly boat savvy, gains a sense of pride and accomplishment having taken their partner and/or family off independently exploring the local area in a head turning and high tech, eco friendly craft.

The design has been progressed in conjunction with Simon Patterson of Patterson Boat Works Ltd. Simon’s expertise on hybrid electric propulsion has been used extensively in this design, and having won Boat of the Show, London Boat Show 2010 for the FE Elektra (Fast Electric), Patterson Boat Works are the right people to build this design. The design and drawing work has progressed with the capabilities and skills of Patterson BoatWorks at the forefront of consideration, with Simon also providing the costing information. It is therefore the case that this design can be put into production almost immediately at the Patterson Boat Works facility in the Lake District, United Kingdom

This is a highly advanced, fuel efficient Super Yacht tender capable of carrying a crew of 4 persons for 2 days of local cruising independent of the main yacht. A high quality yacht finish and high specification level for fittings, accommodation and equipment is demanded for all aspects of the vessel. The vessel employs an interesting layout, which emphasises “Outdoor Living”. On deck, there are 2 large sunbathing areas fore and aft, a sugar scoop stern to allow easy access over the stern for docking and swimmers, a centralised cockpit which includes seating, helm controls and an outdoor galley, wet bar and fridge unit. Fore and aft cuddy cabins are accessed from the cockpit. In the forward cabin there is an almost full beam double berth with stowage, and a WC. In the aft cabin there are two single berths, or optionally, a double. There is ample stowage for equipment, stores and toys in a large forward locker, and a fold out anchor retrieval and stowage system is employed in the bow. The machinery and engine is located in the aft part of the cockpit, the top of which forms the galley and wet bar unit. The entire cockpit is covered by a hard top canopy which provides weather and UV protection to the helm, and also a place to mount navigation electronics. A wrap around screen is also provided.
